A pair of young cousins were killed in what police are calling a murder-suicide at a St. Louis birthday party that was livestreamed.
Kuaron Harvey, 14, and Paris Harvey, 12, were live on Instagram around 2 a.m. Friday when the younger child’s gun went off and killed her cousin, prompting her to shoot herself, according to CBS News.
Police initially described the fatal incident as a murder-suicide, but their family claims this is not the case.
“There was no murder. Shinise Harvey, Paris’s distraught mother, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, “It wasn’t a suicide.” “It was a freak occurrence.” It took place.”
Relatives who saw the video said the couple was “trying to be too hip” at the time of the shooting.
According to police, the cousins were discovered unresponsive at 2:07 a.m. and were both pronounced dead at the scene.
“It wasn’t like they were arguing or anything,” said Susan Dyson, the deceased girl’s grandmother. “They were fooling around with a gun when they shouldn’t have been.” Of course, they shouldn’t have been doing it in the first place.
“I believe it just went off,” Dyson explained. “It went off by accident.”
She claimed the two went into the bathroom to film in front of a mirror while at a birthday party for younger family members. That’s when the tragedy struck.
According to the family, the two were so close that they were like “brother and sister,” and they usually horsed around when they were together, pulling pranks, rapping, or making videos.
“No matter how well we raise our children, they will stray,” Shinise Harvey told the Dispatch.
The findings of the department’s investigation have not been made public by St. Louis police.
