Not only does watching TV while you sleep use up your electricity, but it could also shorten your lifespan by years!

552 participants between the ages of 63 and 84 participated in a study by researchers at the Northwestern University School of Medicine to examine how ambient light affects health and sleeping patterns.

They discovered that persons who slept with even a little ambient light had a higher risk of developing diabetes, obesity, and hypertension.

The study also discovered that participants were more likely to develop insulin resistance the morning after spending the night in a room with dim lighting, such as that produced by a television.

According to the American Family Physician, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease are frequently connected with insulin resistance, which is the inability of cells in the muscles, fat, and liver to respond to insulin as it should.

Zee stated, “We are demonstrating a process that might be crucial to understand why this occurs. We demonstrate how it is influencing your capacity to control glucose.

In turn, statistics revealed that 17.8% of the study’s participants who slept at night with ambient light had diabetes, compared to just 9.8% of those who dozed off in complete darkness.

In contrast, just over 25% of people who slept in complete darkness fell into the category of obesity, compared to 40.7% of those who slept with ambient light (26.7 percent ).

The sleep study also discovered some further unsettling data connecting light to medical issues.

Ambient light sleepers had a higher likelihood of staying awake later and sleeping later the next day.

According to Zee to CNN, “we know late sleepers tend to also have a higher risk for cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.”

Less than half of all individuals in the study were found to sleep for more than five hours every night in a room that was completely dark.

Of course, sleep specialists are warning about more than just TVs; they are also concerned about distractions from smartphones during the night.

A 2019 study found that 36% of teenagers and 26% of adults wake up at least once throughout the night to check their mobile device. The survey’s director of research called this “disruption” of sleep a “real worry.”

People should put down their phones at least three hours before night, according to a sleep specialist, since “the blue light emitted on your screen might deceive your mind into thinking that it’s daytime even when it’s dark outside.”
