Great white shark attack on swimmer in front of horrified friend

A great white shark attacked a woman while she was swimming, while her scared friend looked on.

The victim was treated at the hospital for puncture and laceration wounds to her upper right thigh.

According to reports, she received stitches for her injuries and is currently doing fine.

The woman was attacked while swimming in the waters outside San Diego, according to Jon Edelbrock, lifeguard chief for the city of Del Mar.

He believes the shark was a young great white shark, but officials are waiting for scientists to confirm this.

When a lifeguard saw the women in the water shortly after 10 a.m. on Friday, he realised they were in danger.

Their strokes changed while they were swimming back to shore after more than a mile.

As they were a few hundred metres from the shore but outside of the surf zone, the friend began to frantically wave their hands for assistance.

The lifeguard assisted the companions in returning to shore as safely as possible, but he did not see the juvenile great white shark, which is sometimes sighted swimming in the Pacific waters off Del Mar’s shoreline.

Jon commented on how well the event was handled: “She had a diligent swim buddy. They both maintained their composure quite well.”

Since the event, the beach has been closed for at least 48 hours.

According to the sources, an 8-foot-long juvenile great white shark washed up dead on the shores of Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve and State Beach on Sunday, approximately three miles south of the Friday attack.
