Anupam Mittal, the creator of Shaadi.com, became emotional during a pitch on the second episode of the much-discussed show Shark Tank India Season 2. During the episode, one of the contestants, Abhishek Baheti, and his nephew Divyajeet, demonstrated their device to the judges and told them the narrative behind the notion of smartphones developed just for children.
Baheti manufactures smartwatches for children that can make video and audio calls with just a SIM card inserted. It is great for youngsters because the watches can function without a phone and allow children to make video and audio calls to their parents at any time, according to Baheti.
When Peyush Bansal, CEO and Founder of Lenskart, queried Baheti about the tale and reason behind the invention, he revealed that his family had lost a small child in a devastating fire tragedy.
He claimed that their Mumbai home was destroyed by fire a few years ago. He stated that he could only save two of the four persons inside the house. A youngster and an elderly relative died as a result of the smoke, but Divyajeet and his mother survived. The mishap inspired him to create a device that allows youngsters to communicate with their parents in times of emergency.
The incident shifted all of the sharks on the panel. Mittal also revealed that his maternal grandmother died in a fire two years ago.
“I remember two years back my grandmother perished in a fire. This thing still makes me think. I keep wondering how long she might have cried for help. It breaks my heart every time I think about it. So why not for old people as well” he asked, his eyes welling up with tears.
He asked Baheti why he hadn’t created something similar for the elder, who is equally powerless.
At the end of the pitch, Mittal and Vineeta Singh, CEO and founder of Sugar Cosmetics gave Baheti Rs 1 crore for 10% equity and Rs 1 crore in debt with 15% interest (valuation Rs 10 crore). Other sharks, like Peyush Bansal, Aman Gupta, and Namita Thapar, declined to invest in the initiative.
