Victoria Fisher was only 5 when she suffered a third of her brain damage when she collapsed at school due to a stroke, which was followed by another in the hospital. A youngster who was left largely paralysed after two strokes when she was five years old is now asking strangers to assist her in regaining her freedom.
A young and healthy little girl from South Croydon, London, fainted at school in November 2019 and was unable to utilise one side of her body. Victoria, who is now eight years old, still has hemiplegia (severe weakness on her left side), which causes her considerable exhaustion and makes it difficult for her to complete some chores.
Laura Hindle, 38, watched in astonishment as her daughter was brought to hospital, where she suffered a second stroke, paralysing the left side of her body and damaging a third of her brain.
Laura told the media, “I still to this day cannot get my head around it, it’s horrific.”
“I had received a call from her school to say that she had taken a bit of a tumble in the playground but she was fine, so I said ‘thanks for letting me know’ and didn’t worry too much,” She added, “But then a couple of hours later I got another call to say she was very ill and I needed to come right away because they had called her an ambulance.”
“When I got there she had completely collapsed, she was just slumped up against one side of the room,” she further said, “She couldn’t talk to me or anything.”
“When the paramedics got there they asked her to put her hands above her head, but she could only lift her right arm. “Then they asked her to smile and there was a visible drop on one side.”
“For a split second it crossed my mind ‘she’s had a stroke.”
“But then I told myself don’t be ridiculous, children don’t have strokes.”
Victoria was transported to the hospital, where tests confirmed Laura’s worst fears: she’d had a stroke, but physicians couldn’t pinpoint the cause or trigger. She suffered a second major stroke the next day, while waiting for a scan with her parents in the hospital, paralysing her left side and injuring 30% of her brain.
Laura has developed a contraption that, after extensive research, could restore Victoria’s arm function by activating the nerves that transfer information from the brain to the limb.
Laura, on the other hand, is determined to provide Victoria with a “normal life” after learning that some youngsters have already begun to tease her about her injuries. She has set up a GoFundMe page to raise £1,000 for Victoria’s machine and therapy, with any remaining funds going toward additional rehabilitation to assist her return to a normal life.
She said: “People that don’t know Victoria might just think that she has had an injury because of her walk.
“But she experiences extreme fatigue and she has a tendency to fall over a lot,” She added, “I always tell her, you’re no different to anybody else, you just need a bit more time.”
