Despite the shelling and explosions, performers began off the Kharkiv Music Fest 2022 on March 26 in the Istorychnyi Myzei metro station, which is now being used as a bomb shelter.
Ukrainians in Kharkiv, the country’s second-largest city, would have been enjoying the annual Kharkiv Music Fest in a larger venue if the war hadn’t broken out.
The musicians performed a symbolic start of the classical music festival, which is conducted every year during which great Ukrainian and worldwide artists participate, and left many tearful, according to organisers.
A Twitter user shared a video of the concert, Johannes Gutenberg, with the caption, “Today marks the opening day of the #Kharkiv Music Festival & the people of Ukraine’s 2nd city weren’t going to let Russian bombs stop them.”
People may be heard applauding the musicians as they play instruments on the steps at the end of the video. “Events like this are a ray of light that help us to trust in positivity and to be sure that everything will be okay,” Maria, a Kharkiv resident, is heard saying in English subtitles.
