A Heermann’s gull spotted near Baltimore is likely to be the first of its kind to be observed in Maryland, according to wildlife specialists.
Heermann’s Gull: This species breeds on hot desert islands off the coast of western Mexico and migrates north to the Pacific coast of North America, as far north as southern British Columbia; it may spread southward from its Mexican breeding grounds. Beaches, rocky shorelines, estuaries, and lagoons are all good places to look.
The bird is thought to be the first Heermann’s gull ever seen in Maryland, according to the organisation. Although the birds are rarely sighted on the East Coast, two Heermann’s gulls were recently spotted in Virginia.
The gull appears to be less than a year old and appears to have gotten off track during migration, according to birdwatchers who flocked to the area to catch a glimpse of the rare guest.
