On February 20, the body of 11-year-old Audrii Cunningham was found in the Trinity River near National Highway 59. She had been missing since February 15, and an AMBER Alert was issued to find her. Her backpack was found near Lake Livingston Dam a few days later.

Audrii lived with her father, Joshua Cunningham, as her parents were divorced. The police suspect a 42-year-old neighbor, Don Steven McDougal, who was already in custody for another crime, of being involved in her disappearance and possible death.

McDougal had a history of criminal charges dating back to 2001, including child enticement. He reportedly lived in a camper on the Cunningham property and sometimes took Audrii to the bus stop or school.

On the day she disappeared, Audrii didn’t take the bus or go to school. McDougal said he was with her that morning but didn’t say if he dropped her off at the bus stop.

Authorities are focusing on McDougal because he was the last person seen with Audrii and because of his car. However, the investigation is ongoing, and they haven’t filed charges yet.
