Kabosu, Shiba Inu behind viral Doge Meme is no more
Kabosu, the internet sensation Shiba Inu behind the viral Doge meme, has died at the age of 14. Social media users worldwide are mourning the loss of Kabosu, who gained global fame and inspired a generation of online memes.
The news was shared by Kabosu’s owner, Atsuko Sato, who thanked everyone for their love and support. Kabosu passed away after battling leukemia and a liver ailment.
Adopted by Sato in 2008 from an animal shelter, Kabosu became an internet icon a few years later when a picture of her with crossed paws and a slight smirk went viral.
Kabosu’s fame also led to the creation of the Dogecoin cryptocurrency, which features her image. “Kabosu is at rest now,” Sato posted on social media, expressing gratitude for the outpouring of affection for her beloved pet.
Kabosu also became the face of Dogecoin, a cryptocurrency that started as a joke but has since gained significant traction. Launched in 2013 by software engineers Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer, Dogecoin was intended to mock the cryptocurrency craze at the time.
Despite its humorous origins, Dogecoin has developed a strong following and is sometimes viewed as a legitimate investment.
The Shiba Inu from the “doge” meme is featured as Dogecoin’s logo and namesake. The cryptocurrency’s community quickly grew online, and at one point, Dogecoin’s market capitalization soared to over $85 billion.
The price of Dogecoin has seen significant fluctuations, with peaks in early 2018 and another spike in 2020 due to a TikTok trend. In 2021, Dogecoin gained further attention when Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, expressed his support for it.
Additionally, the Doge meme was sold as a non-fungible token (NFT) in 2021 for $4 million. Dogecoin is also associated with Watford Football Club, further cementing its place in popular culture.
