Jade Carey, a 24-year-old U.S. gymnast, displayed remarkable resilience by securing a bronze medal in the women’s vault final at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Carey revealed that she had been feeling unwell earlier in the week, with symptoms including vomiting and fatigue. Despite this setback, she was determined to compete, saying, “I’m competing still, I’m fine,” after consulting with a doctor.
Carey’s perseverance paid off as she scored 14.466, earning a spot on the podium alongside gold medalist Simone Biles and silver medalist Rebeca Andrade of Brazil. Reflecting on her experience, Carey expressed pride in her ability to push through adversity, stating, “I’ve really been able to learn how strong of a person that I am.”
The gymnast admitted that her illness had made it challenging to maintain her energy levels, affecting her performance during the final. However, she prioritized her energy and focus while competing. Carey also speculated that her stress might have been exacerbated by her father’s absence, as he had been unwell just before the Games.
Despite the challenges, Carey described her time in Paris as “so much fun” and felt “honored to be a part of the team.” She credited the success of Team USA to their collective passion for gymnastics and the positive atmosphere among the athletes. As the Olympics continue, Carey remains optimistic about her team’s prospects, hinting at more to come.
