The breakthrough came when he reformed his group into Sérgio Mendes and Brasil ’66, which included hits like “Mas que Nada” from their 1966 album Herb Alpert Presents Sérgio Mendes & Brasil ’66. Mendes’s renditions of “Scarborough Fair” and “The Look of Love” further cemented his international reputation.

Mendes is married to Gracinha Leporace, a singer featured on many of his albums, and they have a son, Rodrigo. In 1998, Mendes purchased a mansion in Encino, California, for $1.685 million, which is now valued between $4-5 million. In the 1960s, he also renovated a home in Encino, with young carpenter Harrison Ford among those involved.
