Gregory Hines, a towering figure in the world of dance, left a profound impact before his passing in 2003. With a net worth of $4 million at the time of his death—equivalent to about $7 million today—Hines’ influence extended across dance, acting, singing, choreography, and directing.

Early Life of Gregory Hines

Born on February 14, 1946, in New York City, Hines began tap dancing at just two years old. Growing up in Harlem, he performed with his older brother Maurice Jr. under the guidance of choreographer Henry LeTang. Their act, initially known as the Hines Kids and later as Hines, Hines, and Dad, showcased their talent in nightclubs during the 1960s.

Broadway Success

Hines made his Broadway debut in 1978 with the revue “Eubie!” earning a Theatre World Award and a Tony nomination. His Broadway career continued to soar with roles in “Comin’ Uptown” and “Sophisticated Ladies,” and he won a Tony Award in 1992 for his portrayal of Jelly Roll Morton in “Jelly’s Last Jam.” His choreography for the show was also highly acclaimed.

Musical Contributions & Advocacy

Beyond dance, Hines was a talented musician. He led the band Severance and had a Billboard R&B hit with Luther Vandross. Hines was instrumental in establishing National Tap Dance Day and supported various tap dance organizations, including the Jazz Tap Ensemble and American Tap Dance Orchestra.

Personal Life of Gregory Hines

Hines was married twice and had two children: Daria and Zachary. He passed away from liver cancer on August 9, 2003. Hines’ funeral in Santa Monica and his burial in Oakville, Ontario, marked the end of a remarkable career. His legacy lives on, celebrating a life dedicated to advancing the art of tap dance.
