The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) President, Harold Daggett, is in the news for spearheading a significant strike at Port Newark/Elizabeth in New Jersey that started on October 1, 2024. Daggett’s strong influence in the labor movement is reflected in the strike, which could disrupt container traffic from Maine to Texas and inspire thousands of ILA members to remain united.
Harold was influenced by his father, Harold Daggett Sr., an ILA member, and was born in 1946 in Lower Manhattan, New York. However, Daggett’s family history is still mostly unknown, his labor sector upbringing influenced his future. He began his career that would eventually take him to the top of the ILA while attending Cardinal Farley Military Academy.
Marilyn Daggett and Harold are married, but neither of their wedding’s specifics nor Marilyn’s career are public knowledge. They are the proud grandparents of six grandchildren and two great-grandsons. Together, they have three children: Lisa, Dennis, and John. Daggett has kept a close family life despite his demanding work.
Daggett started his career in the U.S. Navy, but he soon joined the ILA as a mechanic with Local 1804-I, following in his father’s footsteps. He rose through the ranks over time, and in 1998 he was elected President of ILA Local 1804-I. His extensive background in the labor sector and business endeavors have contributed to his current estimated net worth of $5 billion.
