A man in the U.S. is facing criminal charges for assaulting a sleeping passenger on a United Airlines flight. According to The New Zealand Herald, the incident was described as a random and brutal attack.

According to a lawsuit filed by the FBI in Virginia, the attack happened on flight UA2247, which was traveling from San Francisco to Dulles International Airport on October 28, 2024. Two hours into the flight, Everett Chad Nelson, a Florida resident, went to the bathroom. On his way back to his seat, he unexpectedly assaulted a 44-year-old man who was sleeping.

The court documents indicate that Nelson “without notice, began physically attacking a sleeping male passenger by punching him repeatedly in the face and head until blood was drawn.” The attack lasted about a minute before other passengers stepped in to help. The victim ended up with two black eyes and a cut on his nose.

Sandhya Gupta, who was sitting behind the victim, told ABC7 News, “He was just very violently and very aggressively just pummeling the guy… This wasn’t like a bar room… I mean, this was vicious.” Nelson is charged with assault and is set to appear in court on December 11, 2024.
