Raining cats & dogs in Karachi, Korangi Crossing closed after flooding in Malir River

Light to heavy rain showers turns weather pleasant and cool on Tuesday morning in Karachi and other parts of Sindh.

According to the details, Karachi, Hyderabad, Badin, Mirpurkhas, Jamshoro, Kotri, Tando Muhammad Khan, Nawabshah and other parts of Sindh are receiving rainfall.

Malir, Korangi, Landhi, Shah Faisal Colony, Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Saadi Town, Liaquatabad, Federal B. Area, North Karachi, Surjani Town and North Nazimabad were some of Karachi’s areas that received heavy rainfall between Monday night and Tuesday morning.

Karachi University road became inundated due to the heavy rain, with rainwater accumulating to a few feet high on the road linking Hassan Square with Safoora Chowrangi.

Sewerage and rainwater entered houses in the Naya Nazimabad and Azizabad Block II areas.

In Azizabad, residents complained that the sewerage lines were already damaged in the area and the heavy rain made it worse. Showers caused a landslide in Gulistan-e-Jauhar Block III, leading to several cars being severely damaged in the parking of a residential building.

The situation has worsened in the city’s Surjani Town area, with almost 80% of the population in the area forced to relocate to safer places as water entered people’s homes.

Left to their own in such difficult times, Surjani Town residents chose to make boats out of drums and wooden planks.

According to authorities, Gulshan-e-Hadeed received 105 mm rain over the past 24 hours whilst Landhi received 45mm of rain.

On the other hand, Korangi Crossing Road on Tuesday morning has been blocked for traffic after flooding in Malir River.

Traffic Police in its update said that the traffic to Gudam Chowrangi has been diverted to Jam Sadiq Bridge. The traffic from Baloch Colony being guided to Qayyumabad, a police statement said.

The traffic Police department has advised citizens to take suggested alternate routes to avoid the hassle.

It is to be mentioned here that ongoing monsoon rainfall has caused flooding in Malir River and rising level of the water swept away the filter wall of the Malir spillway.

The breach in the dyke and flooding posing threat to Korangi industrial area and the adjacent population.

The Traffic Police had earlier closed Korangi Causeway for traffic due to the rising water level in Malir River.

In Hyderabad, areas of Qasimabad and Latifabad are showing the flood-like situation, rainwater has paralysed routine life as low-lying areas have been submerged with the rainwater.

The UC Nazims in affected areas is overseeing the operation to drain out rainwater with the help of the generator.

Moreover, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has warned of urban flooding in Karachi and other parts of the Sindh province. “More than usual rainfall is expected during the ongoing week,” the federal authority said citing a prediction from the met office.
