A crowded bus ploughed into a tree in Bangladesh’s southern Barisal district, 180 kilometres south of Dhaka, killing at least eight passengers and injuring 20 more, according to the region’s police commissioner.

The driver appears to have lost control of the bus on a highway during a nocturnal excursion, according to Barishal District Police Superintendent Md Maruf Hossain.

Twenty of the 42 persons on board were hurt, with several in severe condition, according to the local police chief.

According to the police official, all of the injured were transported to nearby hospitals and clinics, and the actual reason of the tragedy is still being investigated.

According to the district’s police commander, the tragic traffic collision occurred at 5:40 a.m. local time on Sunday.

Due to bad roadways, poorly maintained automobiles, unskilled drivers violating traffic regulations, and a lack of traffic department oversight, Bangladesh has the highest death rate in the world for road accidents.

According to a news statement issued earlier this month by the Traffic Safety Foundation, at least 543 people were killed and 612 were injured in 427 road incidents across the country last month.
