Lebanon probes former Nissan CEO over Interpol notice

Lebanon questioned ex-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn after obtaining an Interpol red alert for his arrest but did not conduct any additional legal action against him, according to a court official on Monday.

“Judge Imad Qabalan interrogated Ghosn in the presence of his legal representative over the contents of the red notice,”  the official said on condition of anonymity because he is not permitted to talk on the matter.

Lebanon got the Interpol red notice earlier this month, which is not an international arrest order but requests authorities throughout the world to temporarily hold suspects pending extradition or other legal steps.

The notice was issued after France requested Ghosn’s arrest in April for suspected transfers of $16.3 million (€15 million) between the Renault-Nissan alliance, which Ghosn once led, and its Oman dealer, Suhail Bahwan Automobiles.

Lebanon, which does not extradite its people and has barred Ghosn from leaving the country, has requested that France provide all evidence acquired against the former boss so that the judiciary may decide if he can be convicted in Beirut.
