The incident took place early in the morning on the Raqqa-Homs highway; according to Syria’s defence ministry.

According to the Syrian Defense Ministry, at least 11 troops and two civilians were killed; in an attack in northern Syria when a civilian bus was targeted on a route; connecting the cities of Raqqa and Homs.

“A civilian bus was victim to a terrorist attack on the Raqqa-Homs highway in al-Jira area at about 6:30 [03:30 GMT] this morning;” the ministry said in a statement; adding that three other army members were wounded.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights; ISIL (ISIS) cells assaulted a bus in the Jabal al-Bashari area of the al-Raqqah desert; however the bus was a military vehicle.

“The death toll is expected to grow as some others have been critically injured,” according to SOHR.
So far, no one has claimed credit for the attack; but ISIL formerly ruled the area before being driven out; and the group has continued to launch daring attacks following its loss on the battlefield three years ago.
