The Israeli military claimed Wednesday that dozens of its aircraft practiced long-range attacks, a thinly veiled hint at a prospective attack on regional competitor Iran.

The exercise, which took place a day earlier over the Mediterranean, “involved long-range flight, aerial refuelling and striking distant targets,” according to the army. It did not disclose any other information.

The news comes after months of negotiations between world powers and Iran to reach a new agreement to rein in Tehran’s nuclear programme, four years after a deal agreed in 2015 collapsed after the Trump administration unilaterally withdrew.

Israel views Iran as its greatest threat and was a vocal opponent of the 2015 JCPOA, claiming it lacked sufficient safeguards to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear capability or address other Iranian military threats in the region. It has stated that it rejects a new nuclear pact.

Iran has stated for a long time that its nuclear programme is only for peaceful purposes.

Israel is often thought to be the Middle East’s only nuclear-armed state, yet it has never openly admitted to possessing such weapons.
