On the 72nd anniversary of the start of the Korean War and amid escalating tension on the Korean Peninsula, North Korea on Saturday denounced “aggression measures” by Washington and Seoul and vowed to get revenge.

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol and US President Joe Biden agreed in May to use additional US weapons if required to discourage the North amid fears that North Korea may be prepared to perform its first nuclear test in five years.

The state news agency of the North, KCNA, reported on Saturday that a number of labour unions had gathered to “promise vengeance on the US imperialists,” accusing the US of beginning the 1950–1953 Korean War.

Since there was no peace treaty signed after the conflict, US-led UN forces are still formally at war with North Korea.

Pyongyang, according to the KCNA report, criticised Washington for what it called “aggression steps” made with Japan and South Korea, and said that the US effort to place “strategic assets” on the South was intended to start another war.

Aircraft carriers, long-range bombers, and missile submarines are examples of strategic assets.

According to KCNA, “Such arrogant action of the US flames the fury and revenge of the Korean people.”
Yoon promised to go above the beyond to defend freedom and peace as he observed the war anniversary in Seoul.

He posted on Facebook, saying, “We will maintain a strong security posture based on the South Korea-US alliance and a strong military backed by science and technology.”

The seventh nuclear test by Pyongyang, which US and South Korean officials have indicated might happen “any time now,” was a concern leading up to Saturday’s anniversary.
