A ferry carrying 165 passengers caught fire in the middle of the Philippines, but according to the latest information, all but two of the passengers have been rescued.
According to the Philippine Coast Guard, one person’s death has been verified while another person is still unaccounted for.
The vessel known as the Mama Mary-Chloe was out at sea somewhere in the vicinity of the islands of Bohol and Leyte.
A video uploaded by the Coast Guard to Facebook showed survivors arriving in Hilongos, which is located on Leyte. Ubay, which is located on the island of Bohol, was the starting point for the voyage that included 157 passengers and eight crew members.
According to other stories, children were forced to jump from the flaming boat before they could be rescued.
A video that was uploaded to YouTube depicted a significant fire taking place on board the vessel, along with heavy, black smoke billowing into the air and a large number of people swimming in the ocean.
The authorities have stated that they do not yet know what caused the fire, but they estimate that the boat was carrying little more than half of the maximum number of passengers it could hold.
According to the Coast Guard, “the rescue of the crew and passengers was carried out in a timely manner as a result of the assistance from [boats] operating in the waters when the event occurred.”
Due to the fact that many vessels in the Philippines carry more people than they are designed for and that the large archipelago is subject to frequent typhoons, boating mishaps in the Philippines are not uncommon.
