Sanctions against Nicaraguan authorities

Judges who convicted opposition leaders who were imprisoned by Noriega had their visas revoked by the State Department; allowing Noriega to run unopposed and win a fourth consecutive term. The US State Department placed visa restrictions on 93 additional Nicaraguan officials; for their support for President Daniel Ortega’s government.

In order to secure a fourth consecutive term in November elections; that were widely regarded as a farce; Ortega imprisoned scores of opposition figures.
Since then, many of opponents have been charged with treason and prosecuted or convicted in hurried tribunals.
The State Department said that judges who convicted the opposition leaders; as well as legislators who helped outlaw NGOs and civic organisations, had their visas revoked.
According to the department, legislators and Interior Ministry officials aided “the dictatorship; in tightening its authoritarian grip over Nicaraguan individuals.
