UN plan for grain exports for Ukraine has hit barriers

• Turkey says a United Nations plan to set up a sea corridor for Ukrainian grain exports is “reasonable”.
• But Ankara needs more talks with Moscow and Kyiv to ensure ships would be safe.
• Russia’s invasion of Ukraine halted Kyiv’s Black Sea grain exports, threatening global food crisis.

Turkey claims that a sea corridor controlled by Ankara; for Ukrainian grain shipments requires more talks with Moscow and Kyiv to assure ship safety. Turkey has indicated that a UN plan to establish a sea corridor for Ukrainian grain shipments that would be controlled by Ankara was “realistic”; but that more negotiations with Moscow and Kyiv were needed to ensure that ships would be secure.

In February, Russia invaded Ukraine, halting Kyiv’s Black Sea grain exports and risking a global food crisis. The UN wants the two sides to agree to a corridor, as well as Turkey, a maritime neighbour and NATO member.
