At the World Aquatics Championships, American artistic swimmer Anita Alvarez fainted, and her coach had to pull her to safety from the bottom of the pool.
After finishing her dance in the solo free final in Budapest, the 25-year-old was not breathing and had plummeted.
Alvarez was brought to the surface by her trainer, Andrea Fuentes, before being carried away on a stretcher.
Alvarez “feels well now,” according to a statement later issued by the US swimming team from Fuentes.
Alvarez had lost consciousness after a routine in an Olympic qualifier in Barcelona last year, and Fuentes again came to her aid.
Fuentes remarked on the more recent incident: “Anita is doing fine; according to the doctors, [her] heart rate, oxygen level, blood sugar, blood pressure, and all other vital signs are all within normal limits. All is well.
“We occasionally forget that this also occurs in other high-intensity sports, such marathons, cycling, and cross-country running. Everybody has seen pictures of athletes who fail to cross the finish line being helped by others.
“We push past limits and occasionally find them in our sport, which is no different from other sports in that regard.
“Anita is in good health right now, and the doctors concur. She will spend the entire day tomorrow resting, and she and the doctor will decide if she can compete in the free team finals.”
Four-time Olympic medalist Fuentes was quoted in the Spanish newspaper Marca as claiming that she jumped in “since the lifeguards weren’t doing it.”
Speaking to Spanish-language radio, she added: “It seemed like an entire hour. I shouted at the lifeguards to enter the water and said that something wasn’t right, but they either didn’t hear me or didn’t understand.
“Her breathing had stopped. As if it were the Olympic final, I moved as quickly as I could.”
Alvarez placed seventh in the competition with a score of 87.6333 for her dance.
