A house fire in the US state of Pennsylvania killed three children and seven adults, and a firefighter called to the scene was horrified to discover the victims were his own family.

Six of the victims’ names have been confirmed by Pennsylvania State Police, but the youngest children, ages five, six, and seven, have yet to be identified.

A criminal investigation into the cause of the fire has been launched.

The fire is believed to have started on the porch early Friday morning.

According to Harold Baker, a Nescopeck Volunteer Fire Company firefighter, the dead included his son, daughter, father-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, three grandchildren, and two other relatives.

He stated that the three children who died, two boys and a girl, did not live in the home and were only there for summer activities.

Dale Baker, 19, Star Baker, 22, David Daubert Sr, 79, Shannon Daubert, 42, Laura Daubert, 47, and Marian Slusser, 54 have been identified as victims by state police.

Harold Baker stated that his son, Dale, had followed in his father’s footsteps by joining the fire department.

According to police, the bodies were recovered from the destroyed building using police sniffer dogs. According to a police report, three adults were able to flee to safety.

At around 02:30 a.m. local time, a fire broke out in the rural community of Nescopeck, 95 miles (150 kilometres) northwest of Philadelphia (06:30 GMT).

“Firefighters bravely attempted to enter the house in the back, but were pushed back by extensive flames and heat,” Pennsylvania State Police Lt Derek Felsman told reporters on Friday.

Mr Baker told the Citizens’ Voice newspaper in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania: “I knew what house it was just by looking down the street when we turned the corner up here on Dewey [Street].

“I was on the first engine, and when we pulled up, the whole place was fully involved. We tried to get in to them.”

In an interview with WNEP-TV, he stated: “The children present, as well as my two children, were simply visiting their aunt and uncle.

“Those were the ones who own the house. They were there visiting and going into the pool and all that.”

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf expressed he was “heartbroken” over the tragedy on Twitter.

According to CNN, the American Red Cross is responding and assisting those who have been displaced.
