Tehran police clash with protesters over a woman’s death

Iranian police and anti-government protesters have been fighting in Tehran. This is the worst trouble the city has seen in years.

Protests are still going on in many other cities after seven days. Activists say that eight protesters were killed by gunfire overnight, but news sources say that only two paramilitaries were killed.

Unrest began when a woman who had been held by morality police died.

There are different numbers about how many people have died since the protests started.

State media say that 11 people, including security workers and protesters, have died, but Kurdish human rights groups say that 15 protesters have died just in western Iran.

Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman from the city of Saqez in the north-west, died in a hospital in Tehran on Friday after being in a coma for three days. This made a lot of people angry.

She was in the capital with her family on September 13 when she was arrested by morality police. They said she broke the law that says women should cover their hair with a headscarf and their arms and legs with loose clothing. After being taken to a detention centre, she passed out.

There are reports that police officers hit Ms. Amini’s head with a baton and banged her head against one of their vehicles. The police have said that there is no proof that she was abused and that she died of “sudden heart failure.”

Amjad Amini also said that, contrary to what the interior minister said, his daughter did not have any health problems before she was arrested.

Many Iranians were angry about Ms. Amini’s death, and the first protests happened after her funeral. Women were filmed waving their headscarves in the air and shouting “death to the dictator,” which is often said to refer to the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
