A police officer sustained potentially life-changing injuries, In a central London attack that also saw her colleague stabbed in the neck.

According to police, the stabbing near Leicester Square at 06:00 BST has nothing to do with the Queen’s death or terrorism.

Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, called the incident “utterly appalling” at a “momentous time for our country.”

A man in his twenties was arrested on suspicion of causing great bodily harm and assaulting an emergency worker.

According to Met Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley, the female officer was stabbed in the arm before her male colleague chased after the “frenzied” suspect and a tussle ensued.

He added that the male officer was “very seriously injured” after being stabbed three times in the neck and once in the chest, but that he should recover completely.

During the “violent struggle” on Great Windmill Street near Shaftesbury Avenue, other colleagues joined in and fired a Taser at the suspect. Sir Mark stated that he was subdued and then arrested.

He has since been released from the hospital and taken into police custody.

Scotland Yard said the officers’ families had been informed of the “very concerning” attack.

“It’s a reminder to me that with all the calls for reforming the Metropolitan Police, which are absolutely necessary, we should never forget that we’ve got thousands of dedicated men and women going out every day who are willing to be brave for Londoners,” Sir Mark said, praising the officers’ bravery.

The stabbing occurred near Haymarket, between Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus, which is home to many London theatres and Chinatown.

According to London’s mayor, two other officers were injured overnight, including one who was hit by a car in south London.

“These brave officers were doing their duty and assisting the public at this critical time for our country,” Mr Khan said.
