Two New Zealanders who had been held in Iran for a few months had been given permission to leave. The New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade stated this on Wednesday.
Jacinda Ardern, the prime minister of New Zealand, had earlier on Tuesday stated in a video that was streamed live on Facebook that the New Zealand government had been working extremely hard to allow them to leave Iran for the past few months.
“It’s fair to say there’s been an incredibly difficult situation over the last few months,” Ardern said.
The imprisoned couple’s whereabouts were kept a secret, as were Ardern’s and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Topher Richwhite and Bridget Thackwray, who post as Expedition Earth, are two social media influencers, according to The New Zealand Herald.
The couple’s most recent update came from Turkey’s Tas Yol crossing 16 weeks ago.
The New Zealand government upgraded its travel advisories for Iran on Wednesday and advised New Zealanders who are already there to leave.
In a statement released in conjunction with the update, New Zealand reiterated its calls for the government to use restraint in handling the protests and for better protection of women’s rights and freedom of expression.
