Man charged with murder in hotel shooting in Michigan

A man was charged with murder and other crimes after he was said to have killed a hotel worker near Detroit and then locked himself in a room for hours.

Reichard Williams-Lewis, who is 34 years old, was denied bond when he went to court.

He is accused of killing a 55-year-old worker at a Hampton Inn on the third floor in Dearborn, Michigan. The prosecutor’s office says that on Thursday, Williams-Lewis also pointed a rifle at a guest and another worker. He also shot at another employee, hitting an office door on the first floor, and shot at another employee.

In court, police said that the trouble started when staff told Williams-Lewis to be quiet because he was too loud and making other guests unhappy.

Williams-Lewis was told to leave the hotel, but he killed an employee who took an elevator to the third floor to check on his coworkers, said Cpl. Nicholas Damphousse.

“The evidence is this case is alarming,” prosecutor Kym Worthy said. “We have long learned that no place is sacred when it comes to gun violence. Not churches, not movie theaters, not grocery stores or hotels.”

No one knew right away if Williams-Lewis has a lawyer who could say something about the accusations.

Thursday, the hotel and nearby businesses were closed for hours while police, with the help of a lawyer, tried to get Williams-Lewis to give up peacefully.

Gabi Silver said that Williams-Lewis asked for her, but she doesn’t know him.

“I just kept telling him the same thing over and over, about his family and how he wouldn’t get hurt if he gave up,” Silver said.
