Zelensky claims, Russia is aiming at energy infrastructure
Russian strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, are intended to generate a fresh wave of displaced people.
After failing to utilize energy resources as a weapon against Europe, Zelensky said in a video speech to the European Council that “the current Russian leadership has ordered to transform the energy system itself into a battleground.” For all of us in Europe, the repercussions are extremely dangerous.
More than a third of our energy infrastructure has been destroyed, according to attacks by Iranian attack drones and Russian cruise missiles, he claimed. “Unfortunately, as a result, we are no longer able to export electricity to help you preserve stability.”
At least 40% of the country’s capacity for generating electricity has been lost as a result of days of destructive Russian attacks on energy infrastructure. Officials from Ukraine issued a warning earlier this week about impending emergencies and planned blackouts.
“Russia is also inciting a new wave of Ukrainian migration to the EU countries,” Zelensky continued. By terrorizing our energy facilities, Russia hopes to make as many issues with heat and electricity in Ukraine this fall and winter and force as many people to emigrate to your nations as possible.
Zelensky further asserted that Russian forces had mined a crucial dam on the Dnipro river in the southern Kherson district, as well as the nearby hydroelectric plant, setting the stage for a major catastrophe in the south of Ukraine.
In a video speech to the Council of Europe, Zelensky stated, “We have information that Russian terrorists have mined the dam and units of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant.
There are around 18 million cubic meters of water stored in the dam of this hydroelectric power facility.
“More than 80 villages, including Kherson, will be in the area of fast flooding if Russian terrorists blow up this dam. There could be hundreds of thousands of victims. A significant portion of southern Ukraine’s water supply might be damaged. The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station depends on the Kakhovka reservoir for its water supply, therefore this terrorist act in Russia could prevent it from having enough water to cool down. “
As a reaction to the accusations, CNN has contacted the Russian Ministry of Defense.
Since Russian forces took control of the area in March, the hydroelectric plant and dam have been operating at significantly reduced capacity. More than 24 miles (40 kilometers) north of the dam are Ukrainian forces. To stop the Russian military from using the bridge that is a section of the dam, they have carried out a number of strikes against it during the past four months.
Separately, Mykhailo Podolyak, a counselor in the office of the Ukrainian President, claimed on Twitter on Thursday that Russia intended to mine the dam and transformers, forcing Ukrainian citizens to flee Kherson, and flooding the area to halt the Ukrainian counteroffensive in the area. Low-lying ground extends to the south and east of the river.
Podolyak declared that “Russia is prepared for a man-made catastrophe.”
What pro-Moscow officials are saying: Vladimir Leontiev, the administrative district head of Nova Kakhovka who was chosen by Russia, told Russian state media TASS that it is absurd for Russia to destroy the dam of the power plant.
This purpose is vague, even when viewed formally. This is complete rubbish,” said Leontiev.
According to TASS, he stated, “First of all, you need to consider who benefits from it: it is only beneficial for Ukraine to destroy the dam, the hydroelectric power station, to disrupt logistics, to sow fear and panic, and to stop the possibility of supplying water through the North Crimean Canal to the territory of Crimea.
