President of Israel, Isaac Herzog, made the announcement on Friday, that he will invite Benjamin Netanyahu to form the next government of Israel.

This paves the way for Netanyahu to take the helm of the country for a record sixth time and extend his record as the nation’s leader who has served the longest.

Netanyahu will receive the mandate in a formal capacity on Sunday, according to Herzog, who made the announcement.

Following asking each faction in parliament (also known as the Knesset) who they would support for the position of prime minister, Herzog made the announcement after the meeting.

In a statement released by his office, he said: “At the end of the round of consultations, 64 members of the Knesset recommended to the president the chairman of the Likud faction, MK Benjamin Netanyahu.”

He added that 28 Knesset members recommended outgoing Prime Minister Yair Lapid. The same number chose not to recommend anyone.
