Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, a Republican critic of former President Donald Trump, said Sunday that Trump’s early 2024 re-election announcement has accelerated potential GOP challengers’ time frames.
Hutchinson said Trump “accelerated everyone’s time frame” after launching a campaign to reclaim the Oval Office last month.
“You’re either in or out by the first quarter of next year,” he said “Candidates should consider “level of support.”
Hutchinson, who leaves office next month and is considering a 2024 presidential run, said he’ll decide in “early 2023.”
DeSantis won two head-to-head polls against Trump this month amid speculation about the former president’s potential GOP challengers. He is not expected to announce whether he will run in 2024 until after Florida’s legislative session in the spring or summer.
Hutchinson called Trump’s 2024 bid the “worst scenario” for Republicans, citing his suggestion to end the Constitution in his efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
Hutchinson added, “Any leader, former president who says suspend the Constitution tears at our democracy.”
