Buckingham Palace apologizes to Ngozi Fulani
Ngozi Fulani has received a personal apology from Lady Susan Hussey after she questioned her about her “truly from” during a palace reception.
Lady Susan, a former lady in waiting, met Ms. Fulani, the head of a black charity in Britain, on Friday at Buckingham Palace.
She offered her “sincere apologies for the comments… and the distress they caused”, said Buckingham Palace.
According to a statement, Ms. Fulani has accepted the apologies and acknowledged that the comments were not intentional.
Lady Susan reportedly challenged Ms. Fulani to clarify where she was “truly from” while she was a guest at a Buckingham Palace reception last month. Ms. Fulani is the founder of the Sistah Space organization.
Lady Susan, a godmother to Prince William, questioned Ms. Fulani’s origins, despite the fact that she had previously stated that she worked in London and was a British citizen.
Ms. Fulani, the head of a charity, claimed that she felt “interrogated.”
After the uproar, Lady Susan, 83, resigned from her honorary position.
Racism “has no place in our society,” according to a spokesman for Prince William, as a result.
The reconciliation on Friday was “filled with warmth and understanding,” according to Buckingham Palace and Ms. Fulani in a joint statement.
Lady Susan has “pledged to deepen her awareness of the sensitivities involved” and the Royal Households would continue to “focus on inclusion and diversity”, the statement said.
The Royal Households made a commitment to training programm, including “examining what can be learnt from Sistah Space”.
There was also recognition that Ms. Fulani had “unfairly received an appalling torrent of abuse on social media”.
The statement said both Lady Susan and Ms. Fulani wanted the meeting to show that “resolution can be found with kindness, co-operation and the condemnation of discrimination wherever it takes root”.
The “welcome” outcome was believed to have pleased King Charles and Camilla, the Queen Consort.
