Trump to face charges for Capitol riot
The congressional committee into last year’s Capitol brawl will propose three criminal charges against Trump.
According to US media, a House select committee will accuse a previous president with insurrection.
The report is due next week.
Trump supporters stormed Congress in 2021 to oppose Joe Biden’s certification.
The justice department, which is investigating Trump’s role in the rioting, is not required to examine congressional referrals.
Trump claims innocence. “The January 6th un-Select Committee held show trials by Never Trump partisans,” his spokesman stated.
The select committee’s final meeting is Monday, when it will publish charging recommendations.
The panel will also recommend charging Mr. Trump with obstructing an official proceeding and conspiring to defraud the U.S.
The nine panelists will accept the eight-chapter report, based on interviews with 1,000 witnesses, and send it to the Department of Justice (DoJ).
The full report will be released on Wednesday, said select committee chairman Bennie Thompson.
California congresswoman Zoe Lofgren told CNN on Friday that lawmakers have “been very diligent in formulating these [charging] suggestions.”
The House select committee believes Mr. Trump circulated false claims about the 2020 presidential election being stolen before forcing state authorities, the justice department, and his own vice president to sabotage his defeat. The panel says he incited the Capitol riot to stay in power.
The DoJ is investigating the then-Republican president’s riot-related acts.
Seven days after the congressional raid, the House impeached Trump for inciting mutiny.
The US Senate cleared Trump, the only president impeached twice.
Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed a veteran war crimes prosecutor to decide whether to prosecute Trump.
Jack Smith must decide if the 2024 presidential contender should be tried for mishandling secret information found in Mr. Trump’s Florida residence in August or for instigating the violent mob on 6 January 2021.
