One of the major retail centres in a suburb of the capital, Moscow, was consumed by a massive fire that Russian firefighters are battling to put out. Part of the building collapsed as a result of the fire, and one person is reportedly dead.

According to authorities, the fire broke out early on Friday and covered an area of around 7,000 square metres (75,000 square feet) in the Mega Khimki shopping and entertainment complex.

According to the head of the Russian Emergencies Ministry, Sergey Poletykin, at least one person was killed in the event, according to TASS news agency.

Twenty fire vehicles and more than 70 firefighters were at the scene, according to emergency services. They said that the building’s architecture, which is around seven kilometres (four miles) from Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport, caused problems with the work.

The fire spread quickly to a wide area as a result of the roof collapsing, according to a Telegram post from the emergency services for the Moscow region.

The Investigative Committee of Russia, which looks into serious crimes, stated that it was investigating the fire’s origin. It appears that safety requirements were broken during building repairs, according to the head of the emergency services organisation for the Moscow region.
According to a worker, the fire may have started as a result of a short circuit and then spread due to an explosion.

Emergency personnel were reportedly looking into “arson” as a potential cause, according to earlier reports from Russian news outlets.

Social media videos displayed a massive fire and people running from the blazing structure towards the parking lot.

Before the corporations left Russia in the wake of the Ukraine war, Mega Khimki was home to a significant number of Western retail chains, including one of the first IKEA stores in the Moscow region.
