Minibus explodes in Burkina Faso amid militants violence
Officials report that a landmine was struck by a minibus in Burkina Faso, West Africa, killing at least 10 passengers.
The explosion happened in the country’s east, close to the Niger border, and five other people were injured.
As some of the passengers were still missing, regional governor Fada N’Gourma warned that the death toll could grow.
Since 2013, Burkina Faso and its neighbors have been dealing with militants insurgencies. The crisis has caused more than 2 million people to be displaced.
Burkina Faso’s military took control in January of last year with promises to put a halt to attacks, but the fighting has not subsided.
Since 2013, French forces have attempted to assist the local militaries in battling insurgents.
French forces left Mali in August following a diplomatic dispute with the military government of the country, but they are still present in other Sahel nations.
