Military officials in South Korea claim that North Korea has crossed their shared border with five drones.

The country’s joint chiefs of staff claimed that the “unmanned aerial vehicles” violated South Korean airspace in the border regions near Gyeonggi Province.

Before returning across the border, one drone travelled as far north as Seoul, the capital.

After the deployment of jets and attack helicopters, despite 100 attempts, they were not downed.

A military officer from South Korea claimed that although they had subsequently lost track of every drone, they were no longer in flight.

The assault occurs as tensions on the Korean peninsula are rising as a result of the North’s record-breaking number of missile tests this year.

Around 10:30 local time, the drones were detected crossing the border (01:30 GMT).

The two pilots of a South Korean KA-1 light attack aircraft that was one of the participating fighters in the operation later survived the accident.

According to the air force, which was quoted by Yonhap, the plane crashed into the ground in Hoengseong County, east of Seoul, not long after taking off from an air base in the adjacent city of Wonju.

For almost an hour, South Korea likewise stopped planes from taking off and landing at its Incheon and Gimpo airports.

According to a military official from South Korea, Pyongyang clearly provoked this new incursion.

“Our military will continue to respond thoroughly and resolutely to North Korea’s provocations,” the military added.

The South Korean military responded by claiming that it had also flown surveillance planes into the North to take pictures of its military facilities.

In June 2017, five years ago, when tensions between the two Koreas were at their height, a North Korean drone last crossed the border.

Drones from North Korea represent a threat to the security of South Korea because they might be used to spy on the South as well as launch an assault on it.

The North claimed earlier this month to have conducted significant experiments that would aid in the development of its first spy satellite, which could be used to keep an eye on South Korea.

It published an aerial image of Seoul that it claimed to have captured during the test.

According to experts, North Korea is developing and enhancing its arsenal while exerting pressure on Washington to relax sanctions in any upcoming talks.
