Senegal: MPs arrested for abusing a pregnant lawmaker

Two opposition lawmakers were arrested Thursday for abusing a pregnant colleague during a budget discussion, their lawyer said.

Massata Samb smacked Amy Ndiaye Gniby of the ruling coalition after she mocked them while he was speaking.

Mamadou Niang kicked Gniby in the stomach after she was thrown to the ground by Samb.

Samb and Niang were accused of causing harm voluntarily, their lawyer said.

He added that their incarceration breached their entitlement to parliamentary immunity.

The fight has increased political tensions in Senegal after the governing party lost its majority in July.

The defeat has been related to suspicions that President Macky Sall may seek a third term in 2024, violating term limitations and an earlier vow.

Sall, 60, won’t say if he’ll run again.

Samb smacked Gniby while she was speaking to parliament about a spiritual leader opposed to a third Sall term.

Samb hit Gniby after she dismissed his comments and said she didn’t care.
