Solihull freezing lake survivors found; more still missing

Police reported that many persons who were retrieved from a lake close to Solihull in subfreezing temperatures are in severe condition, and a search and rescue operation is currently underway.

According to West Midlands Fire Service, there have been reports of people falling through the ice at Babbs Mill Park while they were playing on it.

It stated that before being transferred to the hospital, patients had received treatment.

There are specialized teams and tools used in the search.

According to the fire service, they received a contact on Sunday just after 1430 GMT.

Residents in the nearby residential area gathered close to the incident while emergency personnel worked at the lake.

She went on to say that it was anticipated that the emergency services will be present there for a while.

A neighborhood natural preserve including a lake, river, wildflower-filled grasslands, and woodlands is called Babbs Mill Park.

When emergency services were summoned, local temperatures were recorded to be 1C (34F). They are predicted to fall to -3C during the course of the night.

The incident came as police in Cumbria said they were dealing with an “incident” at Siddick Pond in Workington. Ice poses risks, according to the Met Office.

A spokesperson said: “With temperatures set to struggle to get much above freezing over the coming days across much of the country, stretches of water such as rivers and ponds are at risk of freezing.

“While frozen rivers and ponds can be fascinating, they can be dangerous and a hazard to life.”
