Special Counsel Smith steps up criminal probes of Trump
Special counsel Jack Smith is moving quickly on two criminal examinations of Donald Trump that have focused on the former president’s state of mind after the 2020 election, including what he knew about plans to hinder the transfer of power.
Smith has made a series of high-profile measures since taking office last month, including seeking a federal judge to hold Trump in contempt for not turning over sensitive data.
Since Thanksgiving, Smith has brought two former White House lawyers, three of Trump’s closest advisers, and his former speechwriter Stephen Miller before a grand jury in Washington. He’s issued a flurry of subpoenas, including to election officials in 2020 battleground states.
Smith takes over a workforce nearly twice as large as Robert Mueller’s Russia team.
Multiple sources say 20 prosecutors investigating January 6 and the campaign to overthrow the 2020 election are moving under Smith.

“Mueller was starting virtually from scratch, whereas Jack Smith is seemingly integrating on the fly into an active, fast-moving investigation,” said Elie Honig.
Smith won’t be bound by Trump’s status as president, as Mueller was.
