During the winter, the city of Delhi typically grabs attention for having dangerously high levels of air pollution.

But this week, Mumbai, which has a sizable coastline and is thought to have better air quality, surpassed Delhi in terms of pollution levels.

Mumbai has now been added to the list of Indian cities with poor air quality.

According to experts, causes contributing to the declining air quality include quick building, bad weather, and rising automobile emissions pollution.

According to government data, the city’s PM 2.5 level on Friday morning was 308, which is higher than Delhi’s reading of 259 and can clog lungs and lead to a number of ailments.

Any reading between 300 and 400 is categorised as very poor, with levels between 200 and 300 being considered poor. PM 2.5 levels in many Indian cities, such as Delhi, Kolkata, Kanpur, and Patna, are frequently far higher than the acceptable limit.

According to the air quality index, or AQI, a value between 0 and 50 is “excellent,” while between 51 and 100 is “satisfactory.”
Breathing is more difficult.

This morning, I noticed that it was cooler than normal and that it was a little difficult for me to breathe. The latter, I later discovered, was because a news reporter had declared Mumbai’s air quality to be “extremely terrible.”

I had just returned from Delhi, a place infamous for its poor air quality. You notice the difference as soon as you land in the city. You quickly feel the heavier air and the smog. Every breath requires a little bit more work. The end of the week saw my return to Mumbai, which made me very delighted.

But today, all Mumbai residents were in the same situation. Our air is actually worse.

Local hospitals in Mumbai have noted a rise in the number of patients seeking treatment for respiratory problems and other conditions linked to poor air quality.

In addition to wearing masks, patients have been encouraged by doctors to stay indoors whenever possible. Mumbai’s civic leaders claim they are acting quickly to improve the quality of the air.

People’s health is being seriously impacted by the poor air quality in Indian cities. According to a Lancet study, pollution caused almost 2.3 million preventable deaths in India in 2019.
