The family of a teenager who lost his life rescuing youngsters from drowning has demanded that greater safety precautions be put in place at the Poole beach where the incident occurred.

In July 2021, Callum Baker-Osborne was killed in Poole, Dorset, while attempting to save his little nieces and nephews who had been caught in a riptide.

At a Dorset Coroner’s Court inquest into his death, the 18-year-old was hailed as a hero.

The coroner declared the death to have been accidental.

According to testimony given at the inquest in Bournemouth, Mr. Baker-Osborne and roughly 30 members of his family travelled from their home in Coventry to the Dorset coast to for a five-day caravan vacation by the sea.

They headed to the neighboring Rockley Point beach shortly after arrival, where witnesses saw them paddling and having fun in water that was around knee-deep until a riptide knocked some of them off their feet and dragged others out to deeper water.

Before giving up from tiredness and falling into the water, Mr. Baker-Osborne is thought to have assisted in saving three or four youngsters, according to the enquiry.

Josh Ayles, a water sports instructor, managed to save several people by pulling them onto his boat and bringing them to safety ashore after taking his powerboat out to help.

Before it was discovered that Mr. Baker-Osborne was missing, it was initially believed that everyone had been found. Four days later, his body was discovered.
