Bodies returned to mourning families after Nepal plane tragedy
Nepali hospitals started the gruesome process of giving the bodies of the victims of the plane tragedy to their bereaved families.
As it reached Pokhara, Nepal‘s capital city, the Yeti Airlines airplane carrying 68 passengers and four crew members plunged into a gorge, broke apart, and caught fire on Sunday.
Six children and 15 foreigners were among the passengers, and it is assumed that everyone on board perished.
Rescue workers have been laboring nearly nonstop to remove human remains from the gorge, which is littered with twisted airplane seats and pieces of fuselage and wing.
Police spokesman AK Chhetri reported that 70 bodies had been found by early Tuesday.
“Last night, we found one body. But there were three pieces. It’s unclear to us if there are three bodies or just one. Only after a DNA test will it be proven “said Chhetri.
He added that drones were being employed in the search for the two remaining bodies, which had been increased to a radius of 2 to 3 kilometers (1 to 2 miles).
According to Bikram Raj Gautam, chief of Pokhara International Airport, the plane’s black boxes were handed over to authorities on Monday.
On Tuesday, hospital personnel dressed in blue and white protective suits and masks loaded bodies covered in plastic into army vehicles as grieving relatives sobbed and hugged outside.
The trucks then proceeded to the airport, where the bodies will be transported back to Kathmandu.
“Eight bodies have been returned to their families. After conducting autopsies here in Pokhara, we will send over 14 more bodies. Forty-eight bodies have been transported to Kathmandu for DNA testing and distribution to relatives “Chhetri said.
