Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao, Australian counterpart Don Farrell to have meeting over video call

• Don Farrell and Wang Wentao will meet by video in the “near future”.
• The meeting was approved by the ministers at WTO ministerial meeting.
• China has imposed a ban on Australian goods.

Following discussions between representatives at Davos, Chinese state media Xinhua claimed on Thursday, citing anonymous sources, that Australian counterpart Don Farrell and Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao will connect by video “in the near future.”

Officials from China and Australia approved the meeting at a brief WTO ministerial meeting in Davos, according to Xinhua.

After years of tense relations, the two nations’ relations are now improving after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and President Xi Jinping met last November on the fringes of the G20.

After unofficial bans were instituted in 2020, many Chinese corporations were given authorization to resume purchases of Australian coal in January.

Since China imposed sanctions on Australian goods ranging from wine to coal, as well as Australia’s calls for an investigation into the Covid-19 virus’s origins and a ban on telecoms giant Huawei from 5G networks, the two countries’ relations as major trading partners have been tense.
