Ex officer Rhett Wilson jailed for abusing his position
An ex officer Rhett Wilson who used his authority to initiate sexual connections with weak women has been imprisoned.
Through his work as a West Mercia Police constable in Shropshire, Rhett Wilson got to know the victims of domestic abuse.
He received a two years and eight months prison sentence at Worcester Crown Court after admitting to three corruption offences connected to the partnerships.
In December before the same court, he was found guilty of perverting the course of justice by erasing evidence.
Wilson, 27, joined the force in 2019 and started stalking and seeking out sexual interactions in December of the same year.
Days following a reference to the force’s Professional Standards Department, he was detained on March 10, 2020.
He was suspended on March 12 following an interview, and while an investigation was ongoing, he resigned in July 2020, according to the police.
Following his Friday arrest and referral of the incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), internal misconduct proceedings will now be conducted.
Wilson previously acknowledged three counts of engaging in corrupt or other inappropriate use of police privileges and authority.
After purging call and message history from his phone in an effort to conceal his crimes, he was found guilty of perverting the course of justice.
Giovanni D’Alessandro of the Crown Prosecution Service said: “Rhett Wilson was fully aware of his professional obligations in relation to those he met through his duties.
“Yet, he targeted women he knew to be vulnerable and used his position of power to exploit them for his sexual gain.
“When he became aware of the police investigation into his behavior, he deleted all evidence from his phone to evade justice, showing a blatant disrespect for the law.”
Sub Ch Con According to Alex Murray, he exploited his power and it’s possible that his victims had no idea what he was doing was unlawful.
“The public need to have confidence police officers will act with the utmost integrity and not abuse their powers,” he said.
“Wilson’s actions could seriously undermine that confidence his exploitive behavior will not be tolerated in West Mercia Police.”
