An inquest has heard that the relatives of a lady whose partially mummified body was discovered in their house for months after her death thought she was still alive.

In the North Yorkshire village of Helmsley, 49-year-old Rina Yasutake lived in the same home as her mother and two siblings.

When emergency personnel discovered her in bed on September 25, 2018, she had been dead for days.

Despite police investigations, no cause of death could be determined, and coroner Jon Heath recorded an open verdict.

Ms. Yasutake’s body was reportedly found after concerns were raised at the neighborhood pharmacy when her sister Yoshika, 56, and brothers Takahiro, 51, frequently purchased bottles of surgical spirit over the course of days.

Her brothers and their mother, Michiko Yasutake, 80, were initially accused of obstructing a legal and respectable funeral, but the case was suspended when it was discovered the family members had a rare mental illness.
