Joe Biden misspells Kamala Harris name at White House event

Years after his vice president taught the nation how to pronounce “Kamala” Harris, President Joe Biden seems to have forgotten Tuesday.

“As Kamala said, we’re all closely monitoring the storms, the floods, the landslides all across California,” Biden said at a White House celebration for the NBA champion Golden State Warriors, saying his second-in-command’s name like “CAM-a-la” rather than the proper “COMMA-la.”

As he gets ready to start his reelection campaign in 2024, Biden, the oldest president ever, is frequently questioned about his mental sharpness. His supporters claim that he merely stumbles and stutters frequently.

Harris’ name was inspired by her mother’s South Indian ancestry, and before or during the 2020 election campaign, she successfully taught a large portion of the populace how to say “Kamala.”

A 2016 Harris Senate campaign video features children saying, “It’s not CAM-EL-UH. It’s not KUH-MAHL-UH. It’s not KARMEL-UH.”

“[M]y name is pronounced ‘comma-la,’ like the punctuation mark. It means ‘lotus flower,’ which is a symbol of significance in Indian culture,” Harris wrote in a 2019 memoir, according to media.

While he continued to avoid inquiries concerning the special counsel inquiry into his alleged handling of sensitive documents, Biden’s memory loss was momentary on Tuesday. At one point, he correctly pronounced Harris’s first name and requested Harris to accompany him out of the room.

At least six times, including most recently on January 5, Biden mistakenly referred to Harris, 58, as president.

If Biden is unable to finish his term, Harris would become the first woman to hold the office.
