Memphis Terminate Department fires two EMTs who responded to police beating of Tyre Nichols
The vicious police beating of Tyre Nichols prompted the Memphis Terminate Department to fire two emergency medical technicians and an emergency vehicle driver, the department announced on Monday. An inquiry revealed that the three had failed to give proper medical care.
Nichols, 29, was severely injured by numerous police officers and was transported to the hospital where he later died from his wounds three days later.
A few minutes after the police had stopped hitting Nichols, EMTs Robert Long and JaMichael Sandridge saw him injured and “failed to conduct an adequate patient assessment,” according to a statement from Fire Chief Gina Sweat.
Lieutenant in the fire department Michelle Whitaker drove them there and stayed in the car once they got there. According to the statement, she was fired in addition to breaking departmental rules.
