President of Peru Dina Boluarte
Following weeks of anti-government rallies that have claimed dozens of lives, the permanent council of the Organization of American States on Wednesday pledged its “complete support” for the president of Peru, Dina Boluarte.
Boluarte, who was present virtually, informed the council gathering in Washington that she had requested that early elections be approved by Peru’s Congress “as soon as feasible.”
The Congress will have a second and final vote to approve shifting the 2026 elections to April 2024.
However, as the death toll from weeks of civil upheaval rises, there is growing demand to hold the polls even earlier.
