US President Joe Biden talks during visit to Mexico border
In March, US President Joe Biden will travel to Canada for the first time since taking office almost two years ago. Canada is one of the top trading partners of the United States.
According to remarks from the White House and Justin Trudeau’s office, Biden discussed his travel plans with Trudeau during a Tuesday bilateral meeting at the North American leaders’ summit in Mexico City.
With bilateral trade in goods and services totaling more than C$1 trillion ($745.1 billion) in 2021, the United States is by far Canada’s largest trading partner.
In Ottawa, the 2020 US presidential election victory of Joe Biden was hailed as the conclusion of the frequently tense relations between the two nations under former President Donald Trump.
The NATO allies have worked together on supply chain disruptions, environmental goals, and security and defence. In addition, they have coordinated their sanctions against Russia and backing for Kyiv in response to their invasion of Ukraine.
Before shutting the door on reporters for his meeting with Trudeau, Biden said, “I’m optimistic about the future and the near term … it’s going to be hard, but there’s a lot we can do together.”
Given that Biden terminated a crucial oil pipeline connecting Canada and the United States on his first day in office, Canada does have some concerns with him. The United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement’s timber, dairy, and auto regulations have also caused a rift between Washington and Ottawa.
The Biden administration’s planned legislation, which would have favoured American electric vehicle producers over Canadian ones, also caused a rift between the two nations.
After intense lobbying by Ottawa and during discussions in the US Congress, that clause was ultimately removed from the legislation before the law was signed last year.
